Darts star suffers freak groin injury while at UK Open

Gerwyn Price has revealed he suffered a freak groin injury while opening a door during the UK Open.

The Premier League star set up a quarter-final meeting with fellow Welshman Jonny Clayton on Sunday by beating Keane Barry 10-9 in the last-16 of the tournament, coming back from 9-4 down to progress to the next round.

‘The Iceman’ has since admitted that the strangest moment of the weekend came the day before his meeting with Barry.

Price has confirmed he suffered a groin injury, and did so away from the oche.

“My back is fine. I opened the door with my leg – probably because I haven’t been to the gym for a couple of weeks – and I pulled my groin,” the 41-year-old said.

“It’s strange. It doesn’t hurt when I play, but it hurts when I’m not playing.”

Paying the Price

Price is yet to win a piece of silverware since his World Series of Darts Finals triumph back in 2022.

However, he claims that the lack of silverware doesn’t concern him as he looks to end his wait for a trophy.

“Honestly, I don’t think about it one bit. You guys keep bringing it up,” Price added. 

“I’m still playing Pro Tours and European Tours, winning games and picking up ranking points and money. 

“I had a terrible year a couple of years ago, so I’ve got a free year now. If I have a good run here and win this, I’m back around world number five. 

“The standard now is ridiculous. Even when you play well you can still go out because someone else throws a great game against you. 

“Over the last couple of years I’ve been down on myself and quite negative. 

“If I can just enjoy it and smile when I lose and smile when I win, that’s enough.”

In a dramatic turn at the UK Open, a referee had to drag a player away following an altercation with an opponent.

Charlie Manby had to be pulled away from James Hurrell after the former beat the latter 6-4 in their third round clash.

Manby was asked about the incident after the game, stating: “I just don’t think he was happy with me giving it the big’un when there’s a lot riding on it.

“I am mates with Jammo, sat on his table for ProTours and get on really well with him.

“He was giving it to me back. That was it, really.”
