Cricket legend Sir Garfield Sobers passes away at 89
Sir Garfield Sobers, widely regarded as one of the greatest all-rounders in the history of cricket, has passed away at the age of 89. Born in Barbados on July 28, 1936, Sobers was a legendary left-handed batter who was equally effective as a left-arm fast-medium bowler and a left-arm spinner. He was also one of the finest fielders of his generation. His remarkable versatility earned him the reputation of being the complete cricketer.
Sobers made his Test debut for the West Indies at the age of just 17 and went on to establish himself as one of the greatest cricketers the game has ever seen. Across 93 Test matches, the legendary all-rounder scored 8,032 runs at an outstanding average of 57.78, including 26 centuries. With the ball, he claimed 235 wickets using both left-arm pace and spin, while his exceptional athleticism in the field earned him 109 catches.
One of Sobers' most iconic innings came in 1958, when he scored an unbeaten 365 against Pakistan, setting a then-world record for the highest individual Test score. A decade later, in 1968, he became the first cricketer to hit six sixes in a single over in first-class cricket, achieving the remarkable feat against Malcolm Nash while playing for Nottinghamshire.
Sobers was also an adventurous captain who never shied away from playing positive cricket. His bold approach was best illustrated in Port of Spain, where a sporting declaration against England allowed the visitors to chase down the target and win a decisive Test. Although the decision proved costly, it perfectly reflected his fearless attitude towards the game.
Born with an extra finger on each hand, Sobers initially earned recognition as a bowler before evolving into a complete all-rounder. His extraordinary versatility saw him excel as a left-handed batter, left-arm fast-medium bowler, left-arm orthodox spinner, and wrist spinner. Among his many memorable performances was a magnificent 254 for the Rest of the World against Australia in 1971, an innings that drew glowing praise from Don Bradman.
Knighted for his immense contribution to cricket, Sir Garfield Sobers also captained the West Indies and inspired generations of cricketers who followed. He was named one of Wisden's Cricketers of the Century and inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame. His remarkable achievements and lasting influence firmly cement his legacy as the complete cricketer and arguably the greatest all-rounder in the history of the sport.
