Cowboys’ Brandon Aubrey addresses brutal reality despite historic contract
Dallas Cowboys kicker Brandon Aubrey just secured a massive bag, but he isn’t about to get comfortable. The former soccer standout turned NFL star recently inked a historic four-year, $28 million extension that keeps him in North Texas through the 2029 season. The deal, which averages $7 million annually, officially resets the market as he becomes the highest-paid kicker in league history.
While the $28 million figure is eye-popping, Aubrey is staying grounded. He understands that in the NFL, “guaranteed” is a relative term. Aubrey recently addressed the brutal reality of his position, admitting that despite the life-changing money, teams can still “eat dead money” and move on if a player becomes a hindrance to the team’s success. It’s a sobering, professional perspective for a guy who has been virtually automatic since he first donned a Cowboys uniform.
“It’s always one kick at a time,” Aubrey said regarding his new contract via Jon Machota of the Athletic. “I just wanted to find my way on a roster and cling onto that position as long as possible.”
That humble mindset has served him well. Aubrey’s path to the pros is the stuff of legends. After a stint in Major League Soccer and a dominant run in the USFL, he joined the Cowboys and immediately set the league on fire. During his breakout 2023 campaign, he made 36 of 38 field goals, including a perfect 10-for-10 from 50-plus yards, earning First-team All-Pro honors. He has since maintained that elite level of production, proving his leg is one of the most valuable weapons in the NFL.
Even with a record-breaking contract in his pocket, Aubrey remains focused on the next rep. He isn’t worried about the fame or the financial security; he’s worried about the next snap. For the Cowboys, having a kicker with that level of psychological toughness is worth every penny.
