Chelsea will be next year’s Tottenham unless they hire the right manager

Chelsea have been warned they could find themselves in a relegation battle next season if they don’t appoint the right manager.

The Blues are on track to miss out on European football this term amid their worst Premier League losing streak in 33 years.

A 3-1 loss at home to Nottingham Forest on Monday afternoon saw them reach a new low under caretaker boss Calum McFarlane.

There are still three games left to play in the top-flight for Chelsea, but they will already want their misery to end now.

And focus can then turn to who they bring in as their next manager, following the departure of Enzo Maresca and Liam Rosenior.

Maresca left his role in January, before Rosenior was dismissed just three months after signing a six-and-a-half-year deal.

It means the hotseat at Stamford Bridge is free – but who will end up stepping into the position over the summer?

Whoever takes the leap will have to be the right appointment, according to talkSPORT’s Andy Jacobs, otherwise, they could end up fighting in the relegation battle like rivals Tottenham next season.

He said on Hawksbeen and Jacobs: “It’s not about the game, the season’s over, people are having a go at the players, but it’s like the Spurs players under Igor Tudor, it’s not them, it’s the manager.

“The manager does matter, who it is, and the whole structure.

“This season’s over and it’s done, now it’s the biggest decision in the club’s history, they’ve got to get it right.

“If they don’t get it right, then everybody can see the writing on the wall and what’s going to happen next season.”

Co-host Paul Hawksbee then asked: “Do you think you could be the Tottenham of next season?”

Jacobs replied: “Oh yes, very much so. Historically, teams that finish a season poorly take that into the next season.

“It’s not just about who they give the job to, it’s about admitting they’re wrong about changing their model of the players they buy and interfering with the manager, let them manage!”

Who could become next Chelsea boss?

Many names have already been linked with the Chelsea job, including departing Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola.

Xabi Alonso is also a free agent, while Fulham boss Marco Silva continues to be touted for a move to a bigger club.

“I’d go for somebody that fans want,” Jacobs began on who he’d want to see in charge. “It’s Iraola or Xabi Alonso for me.

“They’ve got to be Spanish, seriously. All the best managers are Spanish, that’s a fact.”

He added: “I don’t think Marco Silva will be a good idea, I think the fans wouldn’t be happy about that.

“It would be a bad decision, just another bad decision, and if they get it wrong, we’re all done, that’s the end of it.”

On the shortlist

talkSPORT understands that all of the names mentioned by Jacobs are in fact on Chelsea’s shortlist of candidates.

And on top of Alonso, Iraola and Silva, ex-Barcelona manager and iconic midfielder Xavi is a name linked.

However, it’s understood that the Blues are planning to reach out to several names as part of their thorough recruitment process.

And they are currently prioritising the other candidates.
