Channing Frye says Lakers are cooked if LeBron James is number one option

LeBron James has kept the Lakers steady, but Channing Frye sees a much bigger problem ahead.

Los Angeles locked up the No. 4 seed at minimum in the West and home-court advantage for its first-round series, per ESPN. That should feel like a win. Instead, the mood around the team has shifted after Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves went down with injuries that ended their regular seasons. JJ Redick already made it clear the Lakers cannot obsess over seeding now. Survival matters more.

Frye took that concern a step further during the Road Trippin’ Show, arguing that Los Angeles has no real path if James has to become the team’s top option for a full playoff run. His point hit hard because it was simple. If LeBron has to empty the tank in Round 1, what will be left after that?

Why Frye’s warning hits hard

Frye did not sugarcoat it. He said the Lakers are “cooked” if James has to carry that kind of burden, especially at this stage of his career. He also argued that if LeBron somehow drags this group through a series as the clear No. 1, it should completely change the greatest-ever debate.

That take sounds extreme, but James’ recent production explains it. Since Doncic and Reaves went down, he has averaged 28 points, 12.7 assists, 7.7 rebounds and 2.3 steals across three games while shooting efficiently from the field and from deep.

James admitted he has had to tap back into an older version of himself, one built for total control. The Lakers have stayed afloat because of it. The question now is whether that version of LeBron can hold up once the playoffs start, and whether Los Angeles has enough around him to make Frye look wrong.
