Defending Challenge Cup champions Hull KR head into Saturday’s final as marginal favourites for victory as they bid to become the first team to win the competition in consecutive years since their arch rivals Hull FC achieved the feat in 2017.
Willie Peters’ side make the trip to the capital city on a nine match winning streak in all competitions, a run which includes a 62-4 hammering against Saturday’s opponents in their most recent outing last week, in a Super League clash.
A much closer affair can be expected this weekend, but the Yorkshire side will still expect themselves to get the job done as they also chase the achievement of winning the Super League and Challenge Cup double in consecutive years, becoming just the second team to do so and the first Wigan in 1996.
The Robins, unbeaten in the Challenge Cup since May 2024, put over a century of points past third tier side Lock Lane in the third round clash this season, before breezing past Huddersfield, York and Warrington to book their place in a second consecutive final.
Rovers are also in the midst of a four, possibly five, team battle for top spot in the Super League too, currently sat in fourth following their battering of Wigan last week but only two points off league leaders Leeds, having a played one match fewer and with a healthy points difference.
Wigan, record 21 time winners of the Challenge Cup, hold the rare title of underdog ahead of this weekend’s final, having struggled for consistency in their last few games, summed up by their damaging 58-point loss at Hull KR last weekend following a three match winning run.
Last week’s mauling leaves Matt Peet’s side with five defeats from their last nine matches in all competitions, form which has seen them drop down to sixth in the Super League table, albeit only four points behind the league leaders.
Victory on Saturday against the defending champions could be the perfect platform to build on for the rest of the season, with just two matches of the Super League remaining and a post season spot, not secured yet.
The Warriors booked their place at Wembley by hammering Rochdale in their third round clash, before wins over Bradford, Wakefield and St Helens leaves them just one win away from a record extending 22nd Challenge Cup title.
Hull KR have won their last three matches against Wigan, including a combined scoreline of 86-10 across their two meetings already this season, though the Greater Manchester side will no doubt be out for revenge following their disastrous defeat to the Robins last week.
