Canada vs Bosnia prediction

Canada and Bosnia meet for the first time in their history on the biggest stage of all as the first ever World Cup match on Canadian soil takes place in Toronto on Friday night.

Canada head into their opening group match as favourites to for victory in front of their home fans having strung together an impressive unbeaten run in the build up to this, their first ever home World Cup.

The Reds have lost just one of their last 17 matches in all competitions, excluding penalty shoot out defeats, and are unbeaten in their last seven, though five of those have ended in draws.

Canada, managed by former Leeds boss Jesse Marsch, knew of their qualification for this summer’s global event back in February 2023, so have been playing friendlies for the entirety of this season following their quarter final exit in last summer’s Gold Cup.

Marsch’s men have played four friendlies since the turn of the year, beating Uzbekistan in their first game of their pre-World Cup camp last week, while drawing with Iceland, Tunisia and, most recently, Ireland.

Bosnia pulled off one the biggest shocks in World Cup qualifying history to book their ticket to North America this summer, beating four-time champions of the world Italy on penalties in their play-off final back in March.

That match in Zenica was Bosnia’s second consecutive penalty shoot out victory, having also defeated Wales in the same manner in Cardiff in their semi final five days prior.

Managed since April 2024 by Sergej Barbarez in his first ever managerial job, the Dragons have lost just two of their last 15 matches in all competitions, and are undefeated in their last eight in ahead of Friday night’s World Cup opener, albeit with six of those ending in draws at the end of regulation time.

Since achieving qualification for just their second ever World Cup since establishing independence from Yugoslavia, having also played in Brazil in 2014, Bosnia have played two friendlies, a goalless draw in a home send off against North Macedonia before drawing 1-1 with Panama in St Louis upon their arrival in North America.

Canada have never won a World Cup match, in fact they’ve lost all six games they’ve played at this competition across two previous appearances in 1986 and 2022, but Friday night is a fantastic opportunity to record their first ever win.

Spurred on by tens of thousands of home supporters in the crowd and millions more in the co-hosting nation, Canada have been preparing for this match for three years, and probably boast a stronger squad on paper than their opponents – a 2-1 home win for Marsch’s side to get the campaign off to the perfect start seems likely.

Canada vs Bosnia betting tips

Canadian carnival

Canada will have been preparing for Friday night’s match for three years since it was announced they would co-hosting the World Cup for the very first time.

Jesse Marsch’s side take a strong unbeaten record into their opening game and have a stronger squad on paper than their opposite numbers.

Canada will really fancy their chances at winning on Friday and even making it out of the group for the first time in their World Cup history.

Joy for Jonathan

Juventus striker Jonathan David is Canada’s all time leading goal scorer and heads into his home World Cup, having also been born in New York City, having scored 11 goals for club and country since signing from Lille last summer.

David has an impressive international record of 39 goals in 77 appearances for his national team, and will be more pumped than anyone to find the back of the net in the first ever World Cup match played in his home country.

Cornelius carded

No player for either nation has been on the receiving end of more yellow cards in international matches than Canada defender Derek Cornelius, who has received five bookings in six starts for the Reds this season.

The Marseille centre back, who spent the season on loan at Rangers, will be desperate to help his nation record a first ever World Cup win in front of their home fans, and could well put his body on the line to ensure that happens.
