Caleb Williams has ways to go before he can be on MVP-level like Drake Maye

It will be a debate until the day they retire: Caleb Williams versus Drake Maye.

And right now, Maye has a country-mile lead over last year’s former number one overall pick.

Maye, along with Matthew Stafford, is the MVP favorite for what he’s done this year for the NFL-leading 11-2 New England Patriots.

While Williams and the Chicago Bears have been the Patriots’ NFC counterpart as the current No. 1 seed in their respective conference, it’s clear that the Windy City franchise has been winning in spite of Williams’ play.

Last year, the debate was largely Williams versus Jayden Daniels, and while Daniels has been injured for most of the season, this year’s discussion has been dominated by Williams and Maye, with the former third overall pick taking the spotlight.

Maye has played like one of, if not the best, quarterbacks in the league.

He has completed 71.5% of his passes for 3,412 yards, 23 touchdowns, and a 111.9 passer rating, compared to Williams’ 58.1% completion rate, 2,722 yards, 17 touchdowns, and 88.2 passer rating.

Mike Vrabel has placed all of his trust and faith in his 23-year-old quarterback, and it has paid off in a major way.

Meanwhile, Ben Johnson has placed a lot of responsibility on his quarterback, with mixed results.

Williams’ biggest issue has been his accuracy, and Johnson has had no issues publicly calling out his star quarterback.

The first year head coach has acknowledged that they have been winning in spite of their offense at times and has placed the responsibility on Williams.

“It’s not where it needs to be. We’re winning in spite of our passing game, not because of it, and none of us are pleased with that right now,” Johnson said this week.

While Maye is just one strong month away from claiming his first career MVP award, Williams still has work to do if he wants to be mentioned in the same breath as his fellow 2024 draftee.

Even though Williams and Daniels were both drafted over Maye, he looks to be the best of the bunch. It’s of course early and anything can happen.

It was only last year when Daniels put the entire league on notice and had one of the best rookies seasons ever.

Now? Maye is the talk of the town, Daniels is an afterthought and Williams is having an up-and-down year.

However, if you ask any Bears fan whether they would take a 9-3 record as December begins, despite inconsistent quarterback play, every one of them would sign up for that in a heartbeat.

So no, Williams isn’t Maye and that’s okay.

NFL's Greatest......

Ranking the top 10......

Quarterbacks of all-time – Can anyone better Tom Brady?

Wide receivers of all-time – Does Randy Moss or Jerry Rice come out on top?

Running backs of all-time – Stacking Jim Brown, Barry Sanders, Walter Payton, Emmitt Smith and more

Tight ends of all-time – How does Travis Kelce compare?

Williams can do things Maye can’t, and Maye can do things Williams can’t. They are two worldly talents, with one just being further along at this point in their development.

And for New England, they should be counting their lucky stars Maye fell to them at three. And for Chicago, they better pray Williams isn’t the reason they lose in January.
