Bucks GM reveals why he can’t talk about Giannis trade details amid NBA Draft

The Milwaukee Bucks are embracing a new chapter, as they bid farewell to the greatest player in franchise history, Giannis Antetokounmpo, after trading him to the Miami Heat in a multi-player deal. However, the trade cannot be officially completed until the sixth of July, when the league moratorium is lifted and the 2026-27 NBA calendar season officially begins.

Cap experts such as Bobby Marks of ESPN have noted that the structure of the Bucks’ trade with the Heat means that Miami is going to be hard-capped at the first apron. Cap figures are only going to be finalized when the moratorium is lifted, so that’s when the league can officially approve the trade.

This has put the parties involved in a pickle, as league rules prevent those involved in the trade from talking about the ongoing transaction, as Bucks general manager Jon Horst made clear in his presser following the first night of the 2026 NBA Draft.

“Good evening, everybody. Thanks for hanging around. Exciting night, exciting few days. Look forward to taking questions for a few minutes. Before I start, just to be clear, until trades are approved by the league, we’re not allowed to comment on anything. So there won’t be conversations about that,” Horst said, via Mike Prada of The Athletic.

Commissioner Adam Silver also refrained from dropping the names of those involved in an ongoing transaction, as he did not mention Antetokounmpo (as well as Julius Randle, among others) during the draft-night trades he announced. The NBA seems to be very strict regarding this.

Horst can at least talk about the selections the Bucks made on Tuesday night, with Brayden Burries and Nate Ament set to join the team’s burgeoning young core, which includes Ryan Rollins and the players they acquired from the Heat in Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., and Kasparas Jakucionis.
