Braves’ Walt Weiss sends urgent message amid Atlanta’s 1 concerning problem

On Tuesday evening, the Atlanta Braves kept their winning ways going with a 5-2 home win over the Chicago Cubs. The Braves only allowed just one hit to the Cubs, who had been red-hot coming into this game, and Atlanta continued to sit with the best record in baseball at 29-13.

One of the few areas of concern for the Braves this year has been the trend of their runners being picked off on the bases, which continued on Tuesday, when Atlanta was somewhat alarmingly picked off twice by Chicago.

After the game, Braves manager Walt Weiss got 100% real on the issue and how it can be resolved moving forward.

“It shouldn’t happen at this rate… I know we’re trying to do some things different and the guys are working their butts off trying to be really good at it and Antoan [Richardson] has been awesome… Just something we have to clean up,” said Weiss, per Reggie Chatman Jr. of 11Alive Sports on X, formerly Twitter.

While aggressive baserunning can be a good thing in certain moments, it seems Weiss and company want the Braves to dial things back a notch in that regard in order to avoid these unnecessary outs.

Still, overall, the Braves have defied expectations so far in the 2026 season. Many anticipated coming in that Atlanta would be a fringe playoff team, especially considering the many injuries they are dealing with along the pitching staff.

However, Atlanta came out of the gates red-hot and has not looked back from there, holding serve at the top of the standings and looking like the best team in the MLB throughout much of the season.

The Braves will look to become the first team to hit 30 wins this season when they take the field for Game 2 against the Cubs on Wednesday.
