Bayern Munich show no signs of slowing down. In what looked like a potentially tricky test in the Bundesliga at the weekend, Vincent Kompany’s men went to RB Leipzig and won 5-1.

Bayern made light work of one of the best teams in the division, moving 11 points clear in top spot in the process.

The Bundesliga title is not theirs yet, but you would be hard pressed to find anyone who believes Bayern will finish as runners-up or worse.

Not only that, but Bayern are also on course to break a host of Bundesliga records, from total points to goals scored and more in between.

Yet even if they were to go on and make history across various categories, this season would be looked upon as a disappointment if Bayern were to crash out in, say, the last 16 of the Champions League.

There is pressure on Kompany and his players, then, to do themselves justice at Europe’s top table in the months ahead.

So far at least, Bayern have impressed on the European stage. They have won five out of their six matches up to now, beating Chelsea (3-1), Pafos (5-1), Club Brugge (4-0), Paris Saint-Germain (2-1) and Sporting CP (3-1).

The only blot on their copybook was a 3-1 loss to Arsenal, but that result was forgivable. For one it came at the Emirates Stadium, while it remains the only game Bayern have lost in any competition in 2025/26.

Stiffer tests lie ahead in the knockout phase. Bayern have been eye-catchingly excellent this season, yet they would be tested in a two-legged tie against a team like Arsenal, PSG, Barcelona or Real Madrid.

Before they look too far ahead, Bayern still need to make sure of their passage to the round of 16, to which a direct path is available via a top-eight finish. 

Second in the standings with 15 points to their name, a victory over either Union Saint-Gilloise on Wednesday or PSV next week would get Bayern over the line. 

Needless to say, Kompany will want to get qualification wrapped up as soon as possible, so Union will be in for a tough evening when they head to Germany on matchday seven.

Bayern Munich can book their place in the last 16 of the Champions League by beating Union Saint-Gilloise.

Bayern to march on

Only Arsenal (+16) have a better goal difference in the Champions League than Bayern Munich, who are level on +11 with Paris Saint-Germain.

Bayern have been even more dominant domestically, scoring 71 goals and conceding 14 for a goal difference of +57 in Germany’s top flight.

Given they have won 16 games in the Bundesliga, Bayern are essentially beating opponents by an average margin of 3.5 goals. The Bavarians do not do slender 1-0 triumphs.

Another one-sided encounter awaits here. Union Saint-Gilloise are 27th in the table, so they remain in the mix for a play-off berth.

However, they will struggle to contain this relentless Bayern side at the Allianz Arena. A home win by a three-goal margin or more is the way to kick things off.

Thrashing on cards

Bayern Munich are averaging three goals per game in the Champions League and almost four per match in the Bundesliga.

The scary thing is that they may become even more prolific in the weeks and months ahead now that Jamal Musiala is fit again.

Kompany has an abundance of attacking options at his disposal. Bayern’s list of forwards includes Harry Kane, Musiala, Serge Gnabry, Luis Diaz, Nicolas Jackson, Michael Olise and Lennart Karl. Even a second-string Bayern frontline would be among the best in Europe.

Only four teams have conceded more goals than Union Saint-Gilloise, whose backline could easily be breached on four occasions against Bayern.

Kane to shine

Even by his own sky-high standards, Kane is enjoying a remarkable season.

In 28 appearances in all competitions, the England international has scored 32 goals. He is well on course to beat his best ever season tally of 44 strikes in 2023/24.

Since the start of the campaign, Kane has notched six braces and three hat-tricks. In other words, he has scored two or more goals in around a third of his outings.

Against a Union Saint-Gilloise defence which has struggled at this level, Kane can fill his boots once more.
