Avalanche expected to lose depth forward to KHL
Zakhar Bardakov’s time with the Colorado Avalanche appears to be coming to an end after just one season.
The Russian forward is expected to return to SKA St. Petersburg of the Kontinental Hockey League for the 2026-27 campaign after spending the last year in the NHL, according to reports out of Russia.
Bardakov appeared in 60 games for Colorado in 2025-26, recording a goal and nine assists for 10 points while primarily serving in a fourth-line role.
Although the offensive production wasn’t eye-popping, the 25-year-old established himself as a regular member of the Avalanche lineup thanks to his physical style of play and willingness to embrace a checking role.
Colorado originally brought Bardakov over from Russia hoping he could provide inexpensive depth while making the transition to the North American game. He showed flashes throughout the season and earned the trust of the coaching staff, but he never developed into a consistent offensive contributor.
Now, it appears he is set to head back home.
A return to SKA St. Petersburg would represent a reunion with one of the KHL’s premier organizations. Bardakov spent multiple seasons in Russia before signing with Colorado and making the jump to the NHL.
The move also continues a trend of players returning to the KHL after short stints in North America, particularly when larger roles and more offensive opportunities are available overseas.
If this is indeed the end of his time in Colorado, Bardakov will leave with valuable NHL experience under his belt. The next chapter of his professional career now appears likely to take place back in his home country.
For the Avalanche, his departure creates another vacancy among the club’s forward depth, especially after Ross Colton was traded to the Nashville Predators earlier this week.
Colorado enters the offseason looking to rebound after a hugely disappointing playoff exit, culminating in a four-game sweep at the hands of the Vegas Golden Knights in the Western Conference Final.
While Bardakov was never expected to be a major offensive contributor, replacing his physical presence and depth minutes will be another item on the organization’s offseason checklist as it looks to return to Stanley Cup contention in 2026-27.
