Two of all the time great semi finals were played in the men’s draw as world number one Carlos Alcaraz and record 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic each booked their place in Sunday’s final at Rod Laver Arena after winning marathon five-set semi finals.

The 22-year-old Spaniard already has six Grand Slams to his name, but had never previously been beyond the quarter finals of the Australian Open, and is now just one match away from completing the career Grand Slam following his toiling five-set victory over Alexander Zverev in the semi final.

38-year-old Djokovic makes his first appearance in a Grand Slam final since the 2024 Wimbledon final, and broke a duck of four consecutive semi final Slam exits by becoming the first person to beat two-time defending Australian Open champion Jannik Sinner since 2023.

The Serbian will be aiming to achieve a record extending 11th Australian Open title, which would see him become the first man or woman to reach 25 career Grand Slam titles.

On Saturday, the women’s singles final will take place as Aryna Sabalenka takes on Elena Rybakina.

Sabalenka heads into the final as the world number one and has won two of the last three Australian Open singles titles, and has reached her fourth consecutive final in Melbourne, which is also her fifth final in her last six Grand Slam appearances.

The 27-year-old from Belarus is yet to drop a set all tournament following her 6-2 6-3 victory over Elina Svitolina in the semi final on Thursday.

Meanwhile, world number five Rybakina will be looking for just her second Grand Slam title following her victory at Wimbledon four years ago, with this being her third appearance in a Slam final and a second at the Australian Open following defeat against Sabalenka in 2023.

The 26-year-old from Kazakhstan is also yet to drop a set so far this tournament, and reached Saturday’s final with a 6-3 7-6 win over Jessica Pegula in the last four.
