Atletico Madrid exit back on: Forward open to departure after higher offer

Atletico Madrid forward Giacomo Raspadori looked set to stay at the club earlier this week, but a return to Serie A may now be back on the cards. The former Napoli man has had little game time under Diego Simeone, and has attracted interest from AS Roma, where manager Gian Piero Gasperini is an admirer of his.

Arriving in the summer for€22m, with a further €3m available in variables for Napoli, Raspadori was slated for a role behind Julian Alvarez in the attack, replacing the contribution of Angel Correa. Yet Alex Baena has primarily been the preferred pair for Simeone, while Alexander Sorloth has been starting with Alvarez in recent weeks.

Atletico and Roma had reached an agreement over a loan move with an option to buy last week, which Fabrizio Romano says will be worth €1.5m, and the total deal to cost €20-23m if they execute that option. Raspadori had in theory turned down the Giallorossi though, which scuppered the move.

Now though, Romano explains that Raspadori is willing to make the move after movement in his personal negotiations with Roma. Gasperini’s side have upped their offer, say Diario AS, and it could push the deal through. He would earn a salary of around €4m in the Italian capital.

A change to Atletico’s transfer plans

It could result in a change to Atletico’s own transfer plans. With the Raspadori deal off, and little interest in Thiago Almada, who Sporting Director Mateu Alemany was also willing to part with, Los Colchoneros were unlikely to make a move of their own.

Before the transfer window opened, Alemany was supposedly prioritising a left-back or a central defender, while Alvarez’s struggles could nudge Atletico into signing a replacement for Raspadori or Almada. If the Italian does return to Serie A, it would potentially give Alemany more room for manoeuver.
