Aston Villa vs Newcastle United predictions

Newcastle United fans will remember last season’s EFL Cup triumph forever.

Most Newcastle supporters had never seen their side scoop silverware. The Magpies had gone 56 years without a major trophy before their triumph over Liverpool in that Wembley final 11 months ago.

Given that Eddie Howe’s team paired that EFL Cup victory with Champions League qualification, 2024/25 was undoubtedly a successful campaign for Newcastle.

This one is proving to be more challenging. Even after a 2-1 defeat of Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday, Newcastle are outsiders for a top-five finish in the Premier League.

With just 12 rounds of fixtures remaining, Howe’s men are eight points adrift of fifth-placed Chelsea. It would take a monumental effort for Newcastle to qualify for the Champions League from here.

As a result, we may soon see the club shift its focus to other competitions. Newcastle recently lost to Manchester City in the EFL Cup semi-finals, but they will begin the knockout phase of the Champions League against Qarabag on Wednesday.

Before that, the Magpies will resume their bid for FA Cup glory with a crunch clash against Aston Villa.

Newcastle and Villa have had comparable aims in recent years – namely to disrupt the so-called big six and become regulars in the Champions League.

Both teams deserve credit for having broken into that group of elite clubs, although it must be said that Villa have fared much better than Newcastle in 2025/26.

Unai Emery’s team edged out Brighton & Hove Albion 1-0 in midweek to stay third in the table. They hold an eight-point advantage over Liverpool in sixth and are well positioned to qualify for the Champions League.

Unlike Newcastle, though, they do not have a trophy to show for their undeniable progress over the last few seasons. Villa have not won anything since the EFL Cup in 1996, and their supporters are desperate for that to end as quickly as possible.

Villa have had to do things the hard way in the FA Cup. This is their second all-Premier League tie following a 2-1 victory over Tottenham in the third round.

With Villa also in the Europa League, and having a thinner squad than most of their competitors at the top end of the Premier League, there is a danger they will be stretched too thin.

Aston Villa vs Newcastle United betting tips

Aston Villa and Newcastle United will battle it out for a place in the fifth round of the FA Cup.

Newcastle could edge it

If you asked Emery to rank his priorities for the remainder of the season, the FA Cup would surely be at the bottom of the list.

The Premier League is the bread and butter for Aston Villa and they have given themselves an excellent chance of securing Champions League qualification.

The Europa League provides an alternative route into Europe’s premier tournament and Emery’s record in that competition speaks for itself.

For Newcastle United, the FA Cup is much more important. Howe will name a strong side on Saturday, whereas Emery will be tempted to rotate.

Newcastle are attractively priced at 21/10, but hedge your bets with the double chance market.

Goals on low side

Each of Newcastle United’s last four games has featured over 2.5 goals, while six of Aston Villa’s last seven have contained two or fewer.

Home teams usually set the tempo of a game, so we are inclined to believe this contest will follow Villa’s recent pattern.

Because they score fewer goals than the teams around them in the Premier League, Emery’s side will need to lean on their defence in the months ahead.

Bear in mind, too, that the two league games between this pair this season contained only two goals in total.

⚽ Under 2.5 goals – 6/5 with 247Bet ⚽

Wissa on target?

Newcastle United went with a front three of Anthony Elanga, Anthony Gordon and Harvey Barnes against Tottenham. It worked a treat.

On this occasion, though, Howe will probably switch back to a traditional centre-forward flanked by two wide players.

Yoane Wissa has been used more often than Nick Woltemade of late, so the DR Congo international will expect to start.

Wissa has looked sharp since returning to full fitness. Even if Aston Villa do not make too many changes to their backline, the former Brentford man will give them plenty to think about.
