While the New York Yankees have clinched a playoff spot, they still have issues at third base. Veteran third baseman Ryan McMahon is being seen as a liability.
On the flip side, the New York is looking to create space for Anthony Volpe to fill in for October.
The Yankees announced Friday that they will start Volpe at third base in a doubleheader against the Baltimore Orioles. Volpe will also start at third base for the first time in his career, per Talkin Yanks.

New York will close out the regular season this weekend against the Orioles. Volpe is batting .241 with 51 hits, 2 home runs, and 26 RBIs.
He has played shortstop throughout his career. In 2023, Volpe was named the starting shortstop. Since then, he has bounced between shortstop and second base, especially in recent memory.

This year, Volpe has had to overcome much difficulty. At the start of the year, Volpe battled a shoulder injury stemming from offseason shoulder surgery that kept him out for 6 months.
The focus on maximizing Volpe's infield versatility is a new approach as they begin the playoffs next week.
The Yankees will conclude the regular season this Sunday. Their first game in the American League Wild Card series will be on Tuesday, Sept. 29. It will likely be against the Boston Red Sox, whom they defeated in the same series last year.
Over his career, Volpe is batting .253 with 19 hits, 2 home runs, 8 RBIs, and 12 runs scored in the postseason.
