The New York Yankees' quest to reclaim the AL East title has unfortunately failed again. After a 6-1 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays, the Yanks have officially ceded control of the division to their rivals. The Rays clinched the division and at least one home series for the 2026 playoffs. Meanwhile, the Yankees have been relegated to the Wild Card round.

It's a brutal blow to New York, who's been chasing that division title for the last month or so. Jazz Chisholm Jr. talked about how it felt like watching their rivals celebrate in front of them. However, the Yankees hitter said that their ultimate goal is still to win the World Series, and that they're focusing on that.

“I mean, it kind of sucks, you know, that's what we work on all season, but it's not the end goal for us,” Chisholm said, per SNY Yankees. “The end goal is the World Series, so it doesn't really affect us here. It's just, we keep going from here on out.”

With the Yankees' loss to the Rays, New York has now dropped to the Wild Card round, where they'll take on either the third-seeded Texas Rangers or the Cleveland Guardians in a three-game series. The biggest loss for New York here is that they will not have any home-field advantage for the rest of the postseason. Even with a superior record than every other team except the Rays, New York will play more away games than home games in the playoffs.

The Yankees have four more games to go before the end of the season. However, New York has virtually nothing to play for at this point. They're locked into the top seed in the Wild Card round, and who they face in the Wild Card round is out of their control.
