The Toronto Maple Leafs have opened their preseason, playing split-squad games against the Montreal Canadiens. Fans of the Maple Leafs got to see Gavin McKenna play in a game for the first time with the franchise.

The team will play another split-squad contest on Wednesday against the Ottawa Senators, in their final tuneup before the regular season. As the Leafs prepare for opening night, they are getting an injury update on one of their depth forwards, according to Luke Fox of Sportsnet.

“Dakota Joshua skated with Marlies group today. Jim Hiller is not certain if the forward will be ready for Opening Night and declined to specify his injury,” Fox posted on X, formerly Twitter.

Joshua has been dealing with an undisclosed injury and did not play in the split-squad games against the Canadiens this past weekend.

Joshua was the 128th overall selection of the 2014 NHL Draft by the Maple Leafs, and after his collegiate career, his rights were traded to the St. Louis Blues, and made his NHL debut with the team during the 2020-21 season. He signed with the Vancouver Canucks as a free agent ahead of the 2022-23 season and was traded to the Leafs ahead of the 2025-26 campaign.

Last year, playing for Toronto, Joshua played in 55 games, scoring ten goals and adding eight assists. Even though the forward missed 27 games, he led the team in hits with 195. In his career, he has played 296 games with 50 goals and 46 assists over six NHL seasons.

The Maple Leafs open the regular season against the Canadiens on September 29 as part of five games being played on opening night.
