Connor McDavid is already a generational talent who will occupy significant space in the annals of hockey, but he is truly skating in rarefied air to begin the 2026-27 NHL campaign. His hunger for the Stanley Cup is growing stronger, and after a disappointing first-round exit last postseason, No. 97 has led his squad to first place in the Pacific Division. Who is going to stop this man? Well, Drew Helleson did his best.

The Anaheim Ducks defenseman hit McDavid after a shot attempt during Thursday's Western Conference clash inside Rogers Place, and the three-time Hart Memorial Trophy winner crashed into the net. Fans held their breath for a minute, as McDavid slowly got back on his feet and then exchanged some words with the opposition. Disaster avoided. Vasily Podkolzin was not willing to brush off the play, however.

The Oilers forward was ejected after throwing a few haymakers at Helleson. McDavid returned to the ice, however, and extended his historic streak. He assisted on an Evan Bouchard goal late in the first period and broke a 1-1 tie early in the second period. The 29-year-old now boasts an NHL-leading 42 points (32 assists and 10 goals) and has scored at least one point in all 17 of Edmonton's games this season.
