Long before Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce married Taylor Swift, former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick was encouraged to ask the pop star out, but he didn't for this reason.
In Kaepernick's memoir (via Page Six), Perilous Fight, the former San Francisco 49ers signal-caller said that his mom, Tessa, told him that he should ask the singer out âÂÂbecause we would be perfect together.âÂÂ
This happened long before Swift began dating Kelce, as he said it was during his NFL playing days (he last played in 2016). While he didn't mean any âÂÂslightâ to the singer, Swift âÂÂwas not [his] type,â which discouraged him from asking her on a date.
Ultimately, everything worked out for the best. Kaepernick and Swift are happily married. The former quarterback is married to radio host Nessa Diab.
Kaepernick's memoir came out almost a decade after he last played in the NFL. He became a free agent after the 2016 season but has not signed with a team since.
During his playing career, Kaepernick was a dual-threat quarterback. He passed for 12,271 yards and 72 touchdowns in his six-year career. He also rushed for 2,300 yards and 13 touchdowns. Kaepernick led the 49ers to one Super Bowl, losing to the Baltimore Ravens in the Harbaugh Bowl.

Nothing ever came of Kaepernick's mom's request to ask Swift out. However, she just got married to Kelce a couple of months ago on July 3, 2026, at Madison Square Garden.
The wedding was held at the World's Most Famous Arena in front of a reported thousand guests. This came almost three years after they went public with their relationship. Swift and Kelce announced their engagement almost a year earlier in August 2025.
They are one of the most high-profile couples in the world. Swift has been an avid supporter of the Chiefs and Kelce, recently attending their Week 1 win over the Denver Broncos with Tom Cruise.
