Brian White scored his team-leading 18th goal and his first in six matches as the Vancouver Whitecaps romped to a 4-1 win Wednesday night, eliminating San Diego FC from playoff contention.
Ryan Gauld scored one goal and assisted another, and Aleksa Cvetkovic and Bruno Caicedo also scored for Western Conference-leading Vancouver (17-8-7, 58 points), which stretched its lead over FC Dallas to four points with two matches to play.
Veteran Thomas Muller came off the bench for his first appearance since Oct. 6 (hamstring) for the Whitecaps, who can clinch the top seed in the West with another home win Saturday against Seattle or a Dallas loss.
Rayan Elloumi exited late after receiving a red card deep into second-half stoppage time after picking up his second caution for delaying a restart.
Onni Valakari scored a late consolation goal in the 83rd minute for San Diego (8-13-11, 35 points), which stretched its winless run to 10 matches.
After finishing atop the West in its first season in 2025, San Diego was trying to become the first MLS expansion club to reach the playoffs in its first two seasons since Nashville in 2020-21.
That would've been difficult even with an upset victory, but that possibility rarely looked likely against a strong Vancouver side playing at home for the first time in six matches.
Cvetkovic opened the scoring in the 24th minute from the second phase of a corner kick, poking in a low, one-time finish from just beyond the 6-yard box after Gauld and Mathias Laborda helped to keep the play alive.
Despite already setting a new career high in goals, White hadn't scored since a 3-3 home draw against D.C. United on Sept. 26. His re-emergence came in the 41st minute, the worst possible time for a San Diego side trailing 1-0 and trying to get to halftime to regroup.
Oliver Larraz provided an excellent, early diagonal cross from the left. White made a fading run to the back post and arrived unmarked to direct his header easily past goalkeeper Pablo Sisniega (four saves) from close range.
Yohei Takaoka made four saves as well for the Whitecaps.
