The Golden State Valkyries are still basking in the glow of their thrilling Game 7 win of the WNBA Finals over the Atlanta Dream to clinch to the franchise’s first title in only their second season of existence. And as it turns out, much of the sports world was tuned in to watch Game 7.

The Valkyries’ Game 7 clincher against the Atlanta Dream in the WNBA Finals drew preliminary numbers of 3.3 million viewers, as per Colin Salao of Front Office Sports. The number of viewers is not yet official, but if they hold, then Game 7 would become the highest watched WNBA game since 1997, the year the league began. Across the series, the WNBA Finals averaged around 1.89 million viewers tuning in, which would make it the most watched Finals series in league history.

The WNBA Finals pitted a younger and upstart expansion team against the more-veteran team seeking a breakthrough after three prior Finals appearances. The Valkyries took Game 1 of the series, followed by the Dream winning Games 2 and 3 and then the Valkyries evening things up in Game 4.

The Valkyries then put themselves one win away from a championship after Game 5, while the Dream, amid scheduling issues, forced the winner-take-all Game 7 with a Game 6 win.

The Valkyries were the No. 2 overall seed in the WNBA standings while the Dream were the No. 4 seed. In Game 7, the Valkyries were led by Gabby Williams who dropped 28 of her 30 points in the second half on the way to winning Finals MVP.

Although the Dream came up short in 2026, they are set to stay a contending team next season.
