The Dallas Mavericks are experiencing a change in the ownership structure as the NBA season rolls on. With Patrick Dumont controlling the majority of the team's ownership shares along with Sivan Dumont, the family plans to expand their control even further.
Patrick Dumont says he plans to investigate buying the remaining shares controlled by long-time team owner Mark Cuban. ESPN reports Cuban still holds a 27% ownership stake.
“Our plan is to look at that and to do that over time,” Dumont said, per ESPN. “I just have to tell you: I love Mark. He's been a great family friend for a really long time. He's just a super passionate Mavs fan and he's frustrated. I respect it. We're going to hopefully do him proud. That's my goal — to make all of our Mavs fans super proud about the success of the team and win a championship.”
Dumont says he is invested in keeping the Mavericks in Texas for the long-term future.
“It's really about long-term investment in the city of Dallas,” Dumont said. “The Dumont family is really committed to building what we hope is the best arena in the NBA, a really significant investment in the city that will help create the new 40-year home for the Dallas Mavericks, a great experience for our fans and inspire our team to win championships. That's really what we're focused on. We had the opportunity, and we're really excited about it.”
Dallas was one of the strongest teams in the NBA not all that long ago. The team has mostly struggled after the loss of Luka Doncic via trade. The Mavericks now have young star Cooper Flagg hoping to lead them back to the postseason.
