The Green Bay Packers have a problem at kicker, and Trey Smack is running out of room for error.
Smack missed two field goals on Sunday, adding to concerns about his reliability at a position where teams need to convert routine opportunities.
According to Pro Football Talk, NFL kickers have made 167 of 170 field goals from inside 37 yards this season. Smack accounted for two of the three misses, with the other coming when Chicago Bears kicker Cairo Santos had a 23-yard attempt blocked by the Minnesota Vikings in Week 2.
That statistic puts Smack's struggles into perspective. Short field goals are opportunities NFL kickers are expected to convert, and missing two in the same game can put a team in a difficult position. Green Bay cannot afford to keep leaving points on the field, especially when games come down to a handful of possessions.
There is still time for Smack to turn things around, but the margin for error is shrinking. Green Bay needs its kicker to make the routine attempts, and another performance like Sunday's could force the team to explore other options.
Article Continues BelowSmack does not need to make every long-distance attempt to keep his job. He does, however, need to start converting the kicks he is expected to make. If he cannot deliver on those opportunities, the Packers may have to find someone who can.
On another note, Jordan Love's offensive line takes another hit with the injury to Sean Rhyan. It is not easy to win football games with a banged-up offensive line.
