The Tennessee Titans dropped a 12-7 road game to the New York Giants in Week 3 action that included a defiant Cam Ward take on his game-ending interception. Ward's starting job came into focus recently after he was recently placed on bust watch.
Titans coach Robert Saleh, who has gambled his own job on Ward's right arm, spoke in a postgame press conference during which he revealed his thoughts on his quarterback's play. Ward threw an interception that effectively ended the game and he threw it in an advantageous situation for his team.
“He's out in the open field, just be smarter with the football, we've got two timeouts left, it's first-and-goal from the eight, we're gonna score, you don't need to force it in that situation, and unfortunately, it happened.”
Ward completed 23-of-36 passes for 181 yards and a touchdown along with his interception, numbers akin to a career backup rather than a first overall draft pick. The Titans activated a new running back prior to the game but were led in rushing by Tony Pollard, who had 74 yards but failed to spark much excitement in a losing effort.
Tennessee is now 0-3 on the season and lost to a Giants team without starting quarterback Jaxson Dart, whose replacement Jameis Winston didn't do a whole lot to move his team. Saleh's Titans are one of the NFL's least interesting watches, and show little sign of turning things around anytime soon. Ward's job appears safe for now, but unless he starts playing significantly better, it might not be enough to save Saleh's job.
