The Minnesota Vikings are 6-0 on the season after defeating the Indianapolis Colts 16-10 in Week 7. It's been an impressive start to the campaign, especially on the defensive side of the ball, as the club has held opponents to 16 points or fewer in five of its six victories. Brian Flores' blitz-happy strategy is seemingly taking over the NFL, and a unique wild stat proves it.
The Vikings defense has had the highest blitz rate of any team in the league games so far, according to Sheil Kapadia of the Ringer. Weeks 7, 2, and 1 for Minnesota are the three games in the league with the highest blitz rate. Flores has his defense blitzing so much that even the team with the second-highest blitz rate (Washington Commanders) is nowhere near the level of Minnesota.
“For the season, the difference in blitz rate between the Vikings and No. 2 Commanders is the same as the difference between the Commanders and No. 32 Bengals,” Kapadia said on X.
Brian Flores seemingly has the Vikings playing at a completely different level when it comes to blitzing opposing quarterbacks. The pressure has completely befuddled opposing quarterbacks this season, and it's translated to 18 total sacks so far, which is good for tied 10th most in the NFL.
Article Continues BelowThe blitzing apparently worked in Week 6, as the Vikings sacked Colts quarterback Daniel Jones four times. Jones was also inaccurate with his throws after being rushed by the blitz, as he finished the day with just 108 passing yards and an interception, completing just 13 of his 22 attempts.
Flores and his defense will have a challenge in Week 8, however. The Vikings are scheduled to take on the Detroit Lions on the road for what should be a fun NFC North showdown.
