Texas is no longer undefeated. The Longhorns fell to Oklahoma in the Red River Rivalry, losing 27-24. Oklahoma hit a field goal as time expired to take the win, but the story of the game was the play of Arch Manning. Manning struggled in the fourth quarter, setting up the game-winning drive for the Sooners.

Now, his coach, Steve Sarkisian, is coming to the defense of his quarterback, per Nick Schultz of On3.

“I think if you took the name off the back of his jersey and you said, ‘Here’s Joe Smith playing quarterback at the University of Texas and here’s a guy who’s beaten four Top-10 ranked teams in his last 13 starts,’ we’d be praising the guy. But the expectations are high for him. He understands that. The expectations are high for all of us. We’ve got to put our nose back to the grind and get back to work,” Sarkisian said of Manning.

While the expectations are high for Manning, not many quarterbacks would avoid criticism after his game against Oklahoma. Manning completed 19 of 31 passes for 260 yards and three touchdowns. Still, he threw two costly interceptions in the game. The first one came with 10:07 left in the fourth quarter. Manning was intercepted by Peyton Bowen, who returned it 42 yards for a touchdown. That pick-six gave Oklahoma the 24-17 lead.

Manning rebounded. On the next drive, he drove the team down the field, finding Jermaine Bishop Jr. for the touchdown to tie the game. After an Oklahoma punt, Manning drove the field again, bringing Texas into field goal range, but the 53-yard attempt was missed, and the game remained tied. The defense forced another Oklahoma punt, leading to another chance for Texas to take the lead.
