Following his first wife Erin's death in 2018, former San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich has gotten married again, this time to the ex-wife of one of his former assistant coaches.

TMZ reports that the five-time championship-winning head coach got married to Mary Barth Budenholzer, who is Mike Budenholzer's ex-wife, on Sep. 16 in Texas. Their marriage license was filed in Bexar County, Texas.

Budenholzer was one of Popovich's assistant coaches for 17 years, from 1996 to 2013. He eventually left to become the Atlanta Hawks' head coach.

It is unknown how long Popovich and Mary Barth Budenholzer have been seeing each other. However, Mike and Mary Budenholzer got divorced in 2016. Two years later, Popovich's first wife of 42 years died. Popovich had two kids with his first wife.

Currently, Popovich is the president of basketball operations for the Spurs. He previously coached the Spurs from 1996 to 2025. Before his coaching career, he played at the United States Air Force Academy from 1966 to 1970.

He would return to the Air Force a few years later as an assistant coach. He would then coach at Pomona-Pitzer and Kansas before his first stint with the Spurs.

Popovich was an assistant coach for the Spurs from 1988 to 1992. He jumped ship to the Golden State Warriors in 1992, and he would stay there until 1994.

In 1996, he returned to the Spurs, and he would remain the team's head coach for almost three decades. The Spurs were dominant under Pop, winning five championships. He was also named NBA Coach of the Year three times. Additionally, he was the All-Star Game head coach four times.

Pop signed a five-year contract extension in July 2023, but health issues would prevent him from completing it. He suffered a stroke in November 2024, and Mitch Johnson stepped in as the interim head coach. He stepped down as the head coach in May 2025, and Johnson became the Spurs' head coach. The Spurs made the NBA Finals during the 2025-26 season, losing to the New York Knicks in five games.
