The Denver Broncos are back at .500 after Sunday’s 24-14 loss to the San Francisco 49ers, and the defeat has put more attention on the team’s offensive play-calling situation.

Sean Payton has not called plays through Denver’s first four games, with offensive coordinator Davis Webb handling those duties. After the Broncos managed only six points through the first 55 minutes against San Francisco, Payton was asked if that arrangement could change.

“It’s too early to… it’s a fair question. I appreciate it. And, man, it’s tough to discuss any of that right now,” Payton said after the loss.

Payton did not announce a change, but he also did not give Webb a firm vote of confidence. Instead, the Broncos coach left the door open to evaluating the situation ahead of Week 5.

“To your original question, each game we look at everything and that’s kind of how we’ll approach this one,” Payton told the reporter.

Webb remains Denver’s primary offensive play caller. Payton continues to help with the game plan and stays involved with the offense, but Webb has handled the play-calling responsibilities since the start of the season.

The Broncos’ offensive struggles have made the arrangement increasingly notable. Denver has scored only 13 first-half points through four games, forcing the team to rely on late production to stay competitive.

The latest example came against San Francisco. Denver trailed for most of the afternoon before a late touchdown cut the deficit to three. The 49ers answered with a touchdown of their own and secured the 24-14 victory.
