The Chicago White Sox are feeling really good about themselves. On Monday, they took a 2-0 lead over the Cleveland Guardians in the ALDS with a 4-3 win.
Relief pitcher Sean Burke played a crucial part. Altogether, Burke pitched 5.1 innings, recorded 6 strikeouts, and gave up one hit. After the game, Burke said things went according to plan, per MLB Network.
“I felt pretty good with everything tonight,” Burke said. “The game plan coming in was good, and I was able to execute…”
The White Sox used a system in which they brought in their relievers immediately after a brief stint from starter Anthony Kay. Altogether, Kay pitched 0.1 innings and gave up a hit, run, and walk. Then, Sean Newcomb came on in relief and recorded 3 strikeouts. Afterward, Burke entered the game.
Grant Taylor ultimately closed it out.
The White Sox are now in prime position to sweep the Guardians in three and move to the ALCS—a complete turnaround from three straight 100+ seasons. The White Sox also made the playoffs for the first time since 2021. Meanwhile, the Guardians won the AL Central division title for the 3rd year in a row.
The White Sox swept the Houston Astros in two games in the AL Wild Card series.
Game 3 of the ALDS is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 7, at Guaranteed Rate Field at 3:00 pm CST. If the Guardians win, Game 4 will be on Thursday, Oct. 8, in Chicago. If it goes to a Game 5, it will be at Progressive Field in Cleveland on Saturday, Oct. 10.
