Dylan Larkin has been heavily involved in the Detroit Red Wings news cycle this offseason. He requested a trade away from the team, then had his captaincy stripped, and finally, Larkin missed the start of training camp due to an upper-body injury.

Now, there is an update on the status of Larkin, per Michael Whitaker of The Hockey News.

“Todd McLellan says that Dylan Larkin has made ‘progress'. Won’t play tomorrow, but there is ‘a chance' he could play in their preseason finale on Saturday,” Whitaker posted on X, formerly Twitter.

The preseason for the Red Wings comes to a close on September 26 against the Columbus Blue Jackets. They will then open the regular season on October 2 at home against the New York Rangers.

Larkin was the 15th overall selection by the Red Wings in the 2014 NHL Draft. He broke into the league with the team in 2015-16, playing in 80 games, scoring 23 goals and adding 22 assists. He also played in the Stanley Cup Playoffs that year, appearing in five games and registering a goal. It was the last time Larkin was in the playoffs, as the Red Wings have missed out every year since.

Overall, the forward has played in 808 games with the franchise, scoring 276 goals and adding 367 assists. His 643 points are tenth in franchise history, and the most among active players. He is also ninth in franchise history in goals and 11th in assists. Larkin was named the team captain in 2021, but lost that role in September after his trade request.
