The Boston Red Sox were recently eliminated from the Major League Baseball Playoffs by their rival the New York Yankees. A new report is coming to light that states Boston starting pitcher Sonny Gray was investigated by Major League Baseball. Gray reportedly may have used a sticky substance to help him in his Game 2 start, during the AL Wild Card series.
“I’m told MLB looked into Sonny Gray potentially using sticky stuff in his Game 2 start in the Bronx last week — but he obviously passed in-game standard checks without penalty, which suggests he is in the clear. Any discipline would likely have been levied by now anyway,” Red Sox reporter Cris Cotillo posted to X, formerly Twitter.
Gray came to the Red Sox before the 2026 season, after playing a few years with the St. Louis Cardinals. He was one of several veterans the Cardinals parted ways with after 2025.

“I think I'm the best pitcher in the American League going through the order a third time. I think that's a fact,” Gray told reporters postgame, per the Associated Press. “I would have liked to have been trusted in that moment.”
During the 2026 season, Gray was excellent for the Red Sox. He picked up 18 victories and posted a 2.72 ERA. In the postseason, Gray made just that one start. He posted a 3.86 ERA due to that game and was credited with the loss.
Boston has now been eliminated by the Yankees in back-to-back years in the postseason. The Red Sox finished the 2026 season in third place in the American League East standings.
