The Boston Red Sox reached the MLB postseason in 2026. They fell short in the American League Wild Card round, however. If Boston wants to take the next step toward winning its first World Series since 2018, upgrading the offense should be a priority. Of course, the Sox can turn to MLB free agency. Trades may also provide a path to improving, though. According to MLB insider Jim Bowden of The Athletic, Boston could reach out to the Cincinnati Reds and Washington Nationals about potential Elly De La Cruz and CJ Abrams trades.

“The Red Sox will also continue to call the Nationals regarding a possible CJ Abrams trade and the Reds if Cincinnati decides to move Elly De La Cruz. Either way, expect them to be aggressive with the aim of adding at least a bat or two,” Bowden wrote in a recent article.

The team obviously does not want to neglect their pitching either. It would not be surprising to see the Red Sox add pitching help. With that being said, Boston was just 23rd in total runs scored during the '26 regular season. De La Cruz or Abrams would give them an undeniable boost in that department.

Both Abrams and De La Cruz are expected to be mentioned in trade rumors this offseason. It remains to be seen if either star will be moved.

De La Cruz hit .283 with an .880 OPS in 2026. He added 30 home runs and 30 stolen bases. Abrams, meanwhile, recorded a .261 batting average and .834 OPS while hitting 33 long balls and stealing 34 bases.

The Red Sox will be a ball club to closely monitor if either player is made available to be traded.
