The New York Jets head to Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday, November 8, trying to keep their season from slipping further away against a Kansas City Chiefs team that is looking to halt a skid of its own. The Jets have lost three straight. They are 2-6 overall (1-3 on the road) and in the cellar in the AFC East. The Chiefs are 3-0 at home and 5-2 overall but have lost two in a row and sit in second in the AFC West a ½ game behind the Broncos.

The Jets are coming off a frustrating 38-33 home loss to the Raiders in which they produced plenty of offense but couldn’t stop Vegas late. New York scored on its first six possessions, led 23-14 at halftime and 30-21 during the third quarter, but Las Vegas rallied with back-to-back touchdown drives to take a lead late. Geno Smith threw for 290 yards, two touchdowns and an interception, while Braelon Allen rushed for a career-high 147 yards and a touchdown and Adonai Mitchell produced a career-best 142 receiving yards with a score. A big red flag for the Jets continues to be their inefficiency in the red zone on offense and defense: New York went just 2-for-6 in the red zone while Las Vegas finished 4-for-4.

Kansas City also melted late in their game last Sunday against the Broncos, blowing a 24-13 fourth-quarter lead in a 28-24 loss at Denver. Patrick Mahomes played much better than he had in the Chiefs’ previous defeat at Seattle, completing 30 of 41 passes for 321 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions, including a 73-yard touchdown to Emmett Johnson. Denver, however, scored 15 unanswered points in the fourth quarter, Harrison Butker missed a 54-yard field goal, and after Mahomes drove the Chiefs inside the Broncos’ 5 in the final minute, Denver made a goal-line stand capped by Malcolm Roach’s sack on fourth down.

Historically, the matchup has produced some memorable games. The most recent meeting was a few years ago on October 1, 2023, when Kansas City escaped MetLife Stadium with a 23-20 win. The Chiefs raced ahead 17-0 in the first quarter before the Jets rallied to tie the game at 20 behind Zach Wilson, who completed 28 of 39 passes for 245 yards and two touchdowns. Mahomes had an unusually uneven passing night, finishing 18 of 30 for 203 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions, but Kansas City retook the lead on Butker’s 26-yard field goal and Mahomes used his legs to help drain the clock late. That game offers a useful blueprint for Sunday’s upset-minded Jets: withstand Kansas City’s early punch, keep Mahomes from creating explosives and turn offensive production into touchdowns rather than field goals. For the Chiefs, the larger storyline is whether they can rediscover their finishing touch after consecutive losses on the road.

Let’s dive into the numbers and see if we can’t find an additional sweat or two.

Here are the best bets our model is projecting for Sunday’s game between the Jets and the Chiefs:

  • Moneyline: NBC Sports is staying away from a play on the Moneyline.
  • Spread: NBC Sports is leaning towards a play on the Jets +9.5.
  • Total: NBC Sports is recommending a play on the Game Total UNDER 46.5.

Here’s why the Game Total UNDER 46.5 is the best bet:

Kansas City’s defense is the anchor. The Chiefs rank 4th in points allowed (18.71 per game), 3rd in touchdown percentage allowed (2.72%), 3rd in passing touchdowns allowed (1.0 per game), 4th in yards per play allowed (5.24), 4th in yards per carry allowed (3.55), 7th in yards per pass attempt allowed (6.71), and 4th in tackle efficiency (93.37). They’ve allowed just 12 touchdowns all season (4th-fewest). New York’s offense is the dead weight because they infrequently sustain drives and even less often finish drives with touchdowns. The Jets rank 25th in points scored (21.25 per game), 23rd in touchdowns (2.12 per game), 22nd in touchdown percentage (3.63%), 25th in rushing touchdowns (0.62 per game), and 23rd in third-down conversion rate (38.0%). They’ve run just 58.5 plays per game (28th) — this is a team that cannot sustain drives. The situational numbers reinforce it. The Jets rank 26th in sack rate allowed (9.62%) with 23 sacks taken (24th), and they’re facing a Chiefs defense that generates 3.43 quarterback hits per game (10th). Pressure plus a struggling offense equals stalled drives.
