Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Nick Martinez is heading into free agency after declining his $20 million mutual option for 2027. The decision adds another uncertainty to the Rays' rotation, which already faces several pressing offseason questions following their World Series loss.

Martinez will receive a $4 million buyout rather than return under the option. MLB insider Jon Heyman reported the decision on X, noting mutual options rarely receive approval from both sides.

The financial details make the move particularly interesting. Martinez earned $9 million in 2026, with the buyout bringing his guaranteed compensation to $13 million.

Declining the option allows the veteran right-hander to explore the open market. However, it does not necessarily rule out a return to Tampa Bay under a different agreement.

Martinez delivered an impressive regular season for the Rays, finishing 15-6 with a 3.10 ERA across 180 innings. His performance helped Tampa Bay capture the American League pennant.

The 36-year-old also emerged as an important clubhouse leader. Manager Kevin Cash praised his influence throughout the season, highlighting the support Martinez received from teammates.

His contribution extended into October, when he allowed five runs across 16 postseason innings. Cash even selected Martinez to start Game 1 of the World Series against Milwaukee.

The Rays ultimately fell to the Brewers in five games, shifting attention toward their offseason decisions.

Martinez's departure from the current contract creates another challenge for Tampa Bay's pitching staff. Fellow starter Freddy Peralta can also enter free agency, while Drew Rasmussen faces a separate club option decision.

For Martinez, the $4 million buyout provides guaranteed money while leaving him free to pursue his next contract.
