The Chiefs’ WR is filing for bankruptcy at 26-years-old.
Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice has a penchant for making headlines, and he’s done so once more by filing for bankruptcy in the Northern District of Texas. Rice is claiming that he has $3.45M in unpaid debts — despite having career earnings of $6M, and being on the verge of getting the first major payday of his career as he 26-year-old is set to hit free agency in 2027.
A variety of legal issues are cited as the core reason for Rice’s financial troubles. Court documents obtained by ESPN show that Rice is claiming that he has just over $13,000 in his checking account, and $677K in personal assets — while owing just over $1.8M in outstanding settlements from lawsuits, as well as outstanding legal fees. In addition, Rice doesn’t own any property and still rents — while also noting that he used his Super Bowl ring as collateral for legal fees. The breakdown in the documents are as following:
- $979,837 outstanding from a settlement in the 2024 car accident caused by Rice in Dallas that resulted in the receiver pleading guilty to one count of collision involving serious bodily injury and one count of racing on a highway causing bodily injury.
- $700,000 from two other victims in the same accident
- $200,000 from a civil suit filed in February by Rice’s ex-girlfriend, alleging physical and emotional abuse.
It’s unclear who the remaining debt money is owed to, totaling approximately $2M.
Rice’s NFL future is likely assured, because when on the field, he has been a difference-maker — which should enable him to receive another contract, one that will be substantially larger than his rookie deal. That said, the litany of off-field issues will ensure he will not earn what he could have made on the market without legal trouble. Rice was most recently sentenced to a 30-day jail sentence in Dallas over the Summer for testing positive for THC, is violation of his probation stemming from the 2024 car accident.
Now the 26-year-old is financially underwater, his Super Bowl ring isn’t in his possession, and he seemingly has nothing to show for earning $6M over the last four years.
