When the Cardinals (3-5) and the Seahawks (4-4) meet Sunday afternoon at Lumen Field, Arizona will be looking to build on last week’s surprising rally and overtime win against the Cowboys while Seattle will be trying to regain their footing after struggling in a 34-17 loss at home against the Bears.
It is not just about last week for the Seahawks, though. The defending Super Bowl champions have lost three of their last four. As a result, they trail the 49ers by three games in the NFC West and are clinging to the final wildcard spot in the NFC. Sam Darnold (quad/rib) has been ruled out for Sunday. He was injured during Seattle’s 34-17 loss to Chicago, a game in which the Seahawks were held to just 252 total yards and went 1-for-11 on third down. They briefly pulled within 20-17 in the fourth quarter on Darnold’s touchdown pass to Cooper Kupp, but Chicago answered with two touchdowns to put the game away. Darnold finished 17-for-34 for 188 yards, two touchdowns and an interception, while Jaxon Smith-Njigba remained Seattle’s most dangerous weapon with six catches for 118 yards and a score. Darnold’s injuries mean Drew Lock will step under center. Seattle has confidence in Lock and they should considering he has started two games this season and led the Seahawks to wins in both BUT Lock is nursing a sore elbow and may be limited in what he can do.
Arizona’s win in Dallas last Sunday has completely changed the complexion of its season and its quarterback room. The Cardinals trailed 17-3 late in the third quarter before Gardner Minshew replaced Jacoby Brissett (since traded to Baltimore) and ignited a stunning comeback. Minshew completed 17 of 23 passes for 188 yards and three touchdowns, leading four straight touchdown drives in regulation, including a 13-yard scoring pass to Michael Wilson with six seconds remaining that tied the game. Tyler Allgeier was equally important, rushing for 147 yards on 11 carries, including a 63-yard touchdown, and finishing with 191 yards from scrimmage. After Chad Ryland missed the potential game-winning extra point, he redeemed himself with a 42-yard field goal in overtime.
Recent history heavily favors Seattle. The Seahawks lead the all-time series 32-22-1 and have won 10 consecutive meetings, including a convincing 31-7 victory at Arizona on Sept. 20. Interestingly, Darnold also missed that game, and Lock responded by completing 19 of 26 passes for 235 yards and three touchdowns, all three scores going to Smith-Njigba, who torched Arizona for nine catches, 155 yards and three touchdowns. Seattle outgained the Cardinals 381-151 and scored the game’s final 24 points.
Let’s dive further into the numbers and see if we can’t find an additional sweat or two.

Our model calculates projections around each moneyline, spread and over/under bet for every game on the NFL calendar based on data points like past performance, player matchups, betting trends, and weather forecasts.
Once the model is finished running, we put its projection next to the latest betting lines for the game to arrive at a relative confidence level for each wager.
Here are the best bets our model is projecting for Sunday’s game between the Cardinals and the Seahawks:
- Moneyline: NBC Sports is staying away from a play on the Moneyline.
- Spread: NBC Sports is recommending a play on the Cardinals +8.5.
- Total: NBC Sports is recommending a play on the Game Total UNDER 39.5.
Here’s why the Game Total UNDER 39.5 is one of our two best bets for this game:
Gardner Minshew is walking into a buzzsaw. The Seahawks rank 1st in defensive DVOA (-24.7%), 1st in yards allowed (276.25 per game), 1st in passing yards allowed (182.25 per game), 1st in yards per play allowed (4.61), 1st in yards per pass attempt allowed (5.9), 1st in yards per reception allowed (9.29), 3rd in yards per carry allowed (3.5), 3rd in interception rate defense (3.24%), and 2nd in quarterback pressure rate (31.17%). They’ve allowed just 16 touchdowns (8th-fewest).
The situational numbers reinforce it. Seattle ranks 30th in third-down conversion rate defense (30.56%) — they get off the field — and Arizona ranks 17th in third-down conversion rate (39.02%). The Cardinals run a lot of plays (69.62 per game, 2nd) for very little production.
Here’s why the Cardinals +8.5 is our other best bet for this game:
The quarterback situation is the entire handicap. Sam Darnold is out with a quad injury and a cracked rib, which means Drew Lock starts on a short week — and he’s been limited in practice for two weeks with an elbow injury. Mike Macdonald was candid about the uncertainty: “He’s able to throw. How much? We’re working through that right now.” Laying more than a touchdown with a backup whose arm is in question is a lot to ask.
Arizona’s side of the ball has actually stabilized. Gardner Minshew takes over after going 17-of-23 for 188 yards and three touchdowns in relief against Dallas, rallying the Cardinals from 17-3 down to a 33-30 overtime win. He’s 17-30 as a starter and has averaged 219 passing yards with 26 touchdowns and 19 interceptions over his last 25 starts — functional, not spectacular, but functional is enough when you’re getting eight and a half.
