The St. Louis Cardinals have promoted Rob Cerfolio to the general manager position, the team announced Friday. Cerfolio is set to serve as the Cardinals' first general manager since Chaim Bloom became the president of baseball operations in 2025. The announcement comes not long after Cardinals former assistant GM Randy Flores was hired as the Houston Astros' new general manager.
Cerfolio and Flores were both linked to different teams early in the offseason. It seemed as if either of them could have ended up being promoted to the GM role if St. Louis indeed wanted to hire a general manager. Flores ended up taking the role in Houston, and now Cerfolio has landed the position in St. Louis. The promotion will likely ensure that Cerfolio stays with the Cardinals.
At just 34 years old, Cerfolio is set to handle no shortage of responsibility. He earned the promotion, however.
Cerfolio worked in the Cleveland Guardians' front office from 2015-2024, making it as high as director of player development. Cleveland is a small market team that excels at developing talent, and Cerfolio played a role in that success.

Cerfolio takes the reins at a key time. The Cardinals are still in a rebuild, but they outperformed expectations in 2026. The idea of St. Louis competing within the next couple of years is not out of the question. Cerfolio, along with Bloom, will need to find a way to continue rebuilding while also navigating moves around a potential contender in 2027 and/or 2028.
