The effects of Rashee Rice's car crash and assault allegations have resulted in the Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver filing for bankruptcy due to his debts.
Rice filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy (which is for “individuals who have financial difficulty preventing them from paying their debts and who are willing to allow their non-exempt property to be used to pay their creditors”) on Thursday, Nov. 5, 2026. He claims to have more than $3.45 million in debts (via ESPN). He filed in the Northern District of Texas bankruptcy court.
He alleges that over $2.1 million of his debts are from various plaintiffs suing him in civil litigations, which have either been settled or are still waiting on a trail.
His role in a 2024 high-speed multi-car crash has resulted in him being sued by several individuals. Additionally, one of his ex-girlfriends has sued him for allegedly repeatedly assaulting her from 2023 to 2025.
The Chiefs star claims to have $677,054 in personal assets (he claimed $39,241 of it to be nonexempt). Among the “personal assets” is $421,825 in “deferred compensation.” He also has $13,640 in his checking accounts and rents a residence (though he claims to not own any property).
However, he still owes his largest creditor $979,837. This is tied to the civil settlement reached related to the crash in 2025. Rice is also disputing potential debts in some of the civil trials.
He is reportedly using his Super Bowl championship ring as collateral with his attorney in the pending civil litigation, Thomas McMurray. The ring is valued at $160,000.
Rice has missed two of the Chiefs' games this year. He has 20 receptions for 243 yards and two touchdowns in the five games he has played.
The Chiefs lost their last game to the Denver Broncos. They are hoping to rebound in Week 9 when they host the New York Jets. Gang Green is coming off a heartbreaking loss to the Las Vegas Raiders last week.
