The Toronto Raptors recently signed newly acquired wing Kawhi Leonard to a lucrative contract extension that secures his future with Toronto through the 2028-29 season. The move comes just days after their trade for Leonard with the Los Angeles Clippers was finally completed following the NBA's investigation into Los Angeles.

Now, some fans are wondering whether Leonard's hefty price tag will prevent the team from keeping fellow wing RJ Barrett around on a new deal, but recently, Raptors general manager Bobby Webster had an optimistic take on that front.

“No, I think ownership has been incredibly supportive. So, any time, financially, we want to make a go for it, they’re very supportive,” he said, per Omer Osman of Raptors Updates on X, formerly Twitter.

Barrett had a strong year for the Raptors in 2025-26, including knocking down a game-winning shot in the playoffs against the Cleveland Cavaliers to extend that series, so it's no surprise that Toronto also wants to keep him around for the long term as he enters the final year of his contract.

The Raptors figure to be a fascinating team in 2026-27, although it remains to be seen how some of the other moves made by teams around them in the standings will impact their race to the top of the Eastern Conference.

Leonard was far from the only big-name player to switch teams this offseason, with the Philadelphia 76ers adding LeBron James and Jaylen Brown, and the Miami Heat acquiring Giannis Antetokounmpo, among others.

In any case, the Raptors are slated to kick off their new season on October 21 with a home game against the Chicago Bulls.
