Purdue ended its long Big Ten drought Saturday, prevailing 24-17 over Illinois at Gies Memorial Stadium for the first conference win in almost three years. The Boilermakers improved to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in Big Ten play, while the Fighting Illini dropped to 2-3 and 0-2.
The win ended Purdue's 19-game Big Ten losing streak, with its previous conference win coming against Indiana in 2023. It also marked the Boilermakers' first win at Illinois since 2022 and brought the Cannon Trophy back to Purdue after the Illini had won the previous two meetings. Purdue is now 41-32-2 in the Cannon Trophy series and has won eight of the last 11 meetings with Illinois.
The Boilermakers finished with 345 total yards, matching the Fighting Illini's offensive output. Purdue was particularly effective in the red zone, scoring on all four of their trips inside the 20-yard line, while Illinois converted only two of four opportunities.
Quarterback Ryan Browne completed 18 of 27 passes for 255 yards and one touchdown. He connected with Tra'Mar Harris for a 21-yard touchdown in the second quarter, giving the Boilermakers a 13-0 advantage. Browne also contributed a two-point conversion on a rush after Antonio Harris' 1-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter pushed the lead to 24-10.
Freshman kicker Jacobo Echeverria Lozano provided nine points, making all three of his field-goal attempts from 30, 34 and 33 yards. He is now 11-for-12 on field-goal attempts this season.

His 31-yard catch in the fourth quarter moved the Boilermakers to the Illini's 2-yard line and set up the eventual game-clinching touchdown. Fame Ijeboi paced the rushing attack with 19 carries for 65 yards.
Purdue's defense also came through with its best performance of the season, limiting Illinois to 17 points and stopping pivotal drives late. The Boilermakers held the Fighting Illini to 2-for-6 on third down after halftime and stopped a fourth-down attempt at the Purdue 17-yard line. John Slaughter intercepted Katin Houser at the Boilermakers 8 after Harris' touchdown, and Purdue recovered an onside kick following Illinois' final touchdown.
Houser finished 21-for-37 for 225 yards and two touchdowns, while Collin Dixon had 10 receptions for 116 yards and a score. The Illini also lost leading rusher Ka'Lil Valentine to a right-leg injury in the first quarter.
The Boilermakers return home next Saturday, Oct. 10, to host Minnesota at Ross-Ade Stadium at 8 p.m. ET.
