The Texas Longhorns added a group of five new players to the roster through the transfer portal this offseason, and one of those players is former Auburn wing Elyjah Freeman. Freeman is expected to play a key role for the Longhorns his upcoming season, and he’s already got his sights set on some lofty goals, as per Tyler Horka of On3.

“They’ve been preaching, ‘Detroit, Detroit.’ That’s all we talk about. From the start to this day, to this hour, it’s always ‘Detroit.’ That’s our goal and that’s the highest standing we try to get to,” Freeman said. “So our mindset every single day when we wake up, when we come to the gym, off days, stretching, massages, anything, it’s all about, ‘Detroit.’”

Detroit is, of course, the location for the NCAA men’s basketball Final Four. That’s a lofty goal for the Longhorns considering the program has not reached the Final Four since 2003. This past season, Texas went 21-15 and 9-9 in SEC play in the program’s first season under new head coach Sean Miller. The Longhorns were eliminated in the Sweet 16.

But Texas has high aspirations, especially if the team’s transfer portal haul pans out. In Elyjah Freeman’s case, he joins Texas after having spent his first season of Division 1 college basketball experience at Auburn. He began his college career at Division 2 Lincoln Memorial College before transferring up.

This past season, he appeared in 38 games for the Tiger, including 21 starts, at a little over 26 minutes per game. He averaged 9.2 points, 5.2 rebounds, 1.2 assists and 1.3 steals with splits of 44.4 percent shooting from the field, 34.3 percent shooting from the 3-point line and 69.9 percent shooting from the free-throw line.
