ARLINGTON -- The Rangers are placing designated hitter Joc Pederson on the injured list.
He won’t return in the regular season after initial thoughts that he could play through his left hand fracture that has kept him sidelined since Sept. 13.
Pederson was struck by a 93.3 mph four-seamer from Arizona starter Brandon Pfaadt in the fifth inning of a Sept. 12 win over the Diamondbacks. He initially stayed in the game to run the bases, but was removed for a pinch-hitter later in the game. Initial X-rays were negative, but additional scans with a hand specialist ultimately showed a left hand fracture.
He had not appeared in a game since leaving that matchup with Arizona, as he and the club hoped he could play through the pain and contribute offensively. He progressed towards swinging off a tee on Tuesday, but it was not enough to be effective.
Pederson missed time in 2025, his first season with the Rangers, due to a right hand fracture after being similarly hit by a pitch. Pederson is one half of the Rangers’ DH platoon with right-handed hitter Justin Foscue, having slashed .245/.338/.496 with 25 homers against right-handed pitching this season.
The move is retroactive to Sept. 19, meaning he could return for a potential AL Wild Card series, should the Rangers advance.
Additionally, the Rangers moved right-hander Cal Quantrill from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day injured list. Quantrill landed on the injured list on Sept. 20 with a right lat strain.
Quantrill was one of the Rangers’ most consistent pitchers this season. He made 14 starts -- all since Jack Leiter landed on the injured list on June 21 after ankle surgery -- posting a a 2.51 ERA in those outings, including a 1.82 ERA in his last nine starts since July 28. He had a career-high six consecutive quality starts entering Saturday.
Quantrill would not be eligible to return in the postseason.
