Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner got their first taste of a Sean Sweeney-led training camp Tuesday, and both Orlando Magic stars came away encouraged by the energy and structure their new head coach brought to the floor.
Orlando opened training camp one day after holding its annual Media Day as Sweeney officially began preparations for his first season as an NBA head coach. Following practice, Banchero pointed toward the communication, energy and effort that stood out during the opening session.
“Just the energy, communication, I thought was pretty high,” Banchero said in a video shared by Orlando Sentinel reporter Jason Beede. “I think (the) guys’ effort was there. Definitely some things we could clean up, but just the overall effort and the attitude of the team was great.”
Banchero also offered a simple description when asked how Sweeney ran his first practice.

“I’ll say loud,” Banchero said. “Definitely high energy. Just a lot of moving parts, a lot of defense, details. Yeah, pretty fun.”
Franz Wagner, Paolo Banchero reveals what stands out about Sean Sweeney
Wagner offered a similar assessment while comparing the structure of Sweeney's practice to his experiences playing with the German national team.
“The practice today reminded me of (the) national team a little bit,” Wagner said. “I mean, I’ve had a bunch of coaches that are very intentional and have their schedule laid out like that.”
Wagner specifically highlighted Sweeney's direct communication style and how quickly it has carried over to the rest of Orlando's coaching staff.
“I think what makes Sweeney very unique is, one, how direct he is,” Wagner said. “He’ll speak about things right away, right then and there, and bleeds that into everybody else. I think the whole coaching staff is on that same page.”

The 25-year-old also believes Sweeney has found an early balance between maintaining a serious environment and allowing his personality to come through.
“I think he has a good sense of humor, too. So, he’s not afraid to show that, too, which I think is important to have both sides,” Wagner said. “Obviously, we want to be super serious and get stuff done, but it’s also a game. We want to have fun playing it.”
Sweeney encouraged by Magic's first training camp practice ahead of 2026-27 season
Sweeney's assessment of his first training camp practice largely matched the impressions offered by Banchero and Wagner.
The first-year coach praised Orlando's approach and effort while acknowledging that the defense was further along than the offense, something he characterized as typical for the beginning of training camp.
“I thought it was a good day,” Sweeney said, according to Beede. “I thought the intent was phenomenal. I thought they did a really good job with their effort. I thought there were defensive … Defense was ahead of the offense, all the normal stuff with training camp. But for the first day, I loved the way they attacked it. Yep.”
Sweeney takes over a Magic team built around Banchero, Wagner, Desmond Bane and Jalen Suggs as Orlando attempts to take another step following three consecutive first-round playoff exits.
The first practice offered only an initial look at what Sweeney's approach will mean for Orlando. For Banchero and Wagner, however, the early themes were already apparent: communication, energy, attention to detail and a demanding defensive approach.
