The Green Bay Packers were on the wrong end of a controversial roughing the passer call late in their 20-17 loss to the Detroit Lions. That penalty was a costly one as it helped the Lions kick their last-second field goal to win the game.
That was one of two iffy penalties called against the Packers in the game, to the dismay of their defense stars. Packers pass rusher Micah Parsons already bashed the referees and the NFL on social media. And after the game, safety Xavier McKinney also called out the officials for those questionable calls, while using some colorful language.
“I don't know how the NFL's going to treat it, but I'm not a big fan of the refs right now,” McKinney said. “I don't think it's great officiating, if I'm being completely honest. I think it's bulls— a lot of the times.”

Kicker Trey Smack missed two of his three field goal attempts, including a potential go-ahead field goal in the fourth quarter that was blocked. Meanwhile, Packers quarterback Jordan Love admitted that the offense wasn't quite at its best.
Based on the penalties the Packers were called for, it seems clear the NFL needs to look at how roughing the passer is being judged. At the moment, there is a disconnect with the referees and the players and fans. At the same time, though, the Packers will need to set aside their frustrations with the refs and focus on what they can control moving forward.
