The Notre Dame football team received a warning Tuesday when the College Football Playoff committee placed them No. 11 in its first rankings. At 7-1, the Fighting Irish have little room to stumble before hosting the No. 1 ranked Miami Hurricanes this upcoming Saturday.

The surprise comes from the gap between evaluations. The Irish sit fourth in the AP poll, but that reputation offers no protection when the committee decides the playoff field. The stakes extend well beyond poll frustration.

The Fighting Irish squandered their first chance at a signature win with a 28-24 loss at BYU, their only matchup vs. a currently ranked opponent. Now, Miami represents their clearest remaining opportunity to strengthen their playoff resume.

ESPN College Football posted the studio reaction Tuesday on X, formerly Twitter, showing the response when Notre Dame appeared outside the top 10.

Greg McElroy offered a much stronger endorsement of the Fighting Irish during the rankings reveal:

“I think if you had to pick them on the neutral field against just about anybody, there probably might be the team I'd pick right now. Above all else.”

Committee chair Hunter Yurachek praised Notre Dame's performance on both sides of the ball but pointed to its lack of a signature win. His explanation makes the Miami game the clearest opportunity to change the committee's evaluation.

After Saturday, the Irish face Boston College, SMU and Syracuse. None appears in the current CFP rankings, leaving Notre Dame without another chance to beat a currently ranked team.

A loss would leave the Irish with two defeats and the same weakness in their case. Winning out afterward could improve their record without resolving the committee's concern about whom they have beaten.

Notre Dame is guaranteed a berth if it finishes inside the final top 12. Saturday won’t automatically decide its fate, but beating Miami would give the Irish a signature win and more breathing room.
