As the Baltimore Ravens quarterback situation gets more dire by the day, there's a world where rookie starter Joe Fagnano and his primary backup, practice squad member Austin Reed, suffer injuries and Declan Doyle has to go to his emergency arm.
Who would that be? Well, heading into Week 9, the honor goes to reserve running back Justice Hill, who has only ever been a running back on the national stage.
Discussing how it feels to potentially be put in that position? On Tuesday, Hill admitted it's pretty “insane,” but he's excited about the opportunity all the same.
“Right, man, that would be dope, man. I definitely would have to go renegotiate my contract,” Hill said. “But, um, it would be a crazy opportunity, um, yeah, it would just be insane. I would have never dreamed of it or even thought about it at this point in life, but if that happened at this point in my career, that would be dope.”
So why was Hill chosen as the emergency quarterback? Frankly, even he doesn't know, but ultimately, if his number gets called, he's going to let it rip and do his best to get the job done.
“Oh, I think Giana asked me this the other day. I'm like, you have to ask Declan, but I don't know, I'm just prepared for every moment,” Hill said. “I think I'm always ready for something. And, um, I think they just have absolute belief that I can get the job done, and I think that's all, honestly, what it came down to. I mean, I don't think they've ever seen me throw a pass or anything like that, but, um, they just believe in me, and I believe in myself, and if that's what needed to be done, I would have got the job done.”
Sitting at 4-4 in a division where every other team has a winning record, if the Ravens are going to keep their playoff hopes alive, they should probably make a trade for another arm – which they are reportedly interested in – as even if Hill could survive a who drives or even quarters as an emergency option, he isn't going to magically become the second coming of Darren McFadden.
