The former CSK captain is willing to take on a coaching role and has outlined his vision for squad strengthening under the new head coach, Zaheer Khan.
Suresh Raina has expressed his willingness to return to Chennai Super Kings in a coaching capacity for the IPL 2027 season. The former CSK captain, who spent over a decade as a key player for the franchise, has already made his interest known to the management. Raina's flexibility regarding the specific role within the support staff reflects his deep commitment to the yellow jersey.
The franchise has already confirmed the appointment of Zaheer Khan as head coach, with Mohit Sharma, Albie Morkel and Gareth Batty joining the coaching support staff for the 2027 season. CSK has decided against appointing a designated batting coach, though the franchise is exploring whether Batty can serve as a batting mentor alongside his other responsibilities.
Speaking on Ravichandran Ashwin's podcast, Raina conveyed his eagerness to contribute to the franchise's future.
"I have already asked them. It's on them now. I would love to work in any role. For me, as long as I'm with the boys and they are winning trophies, that's what matters. Yellow matters to us," Raina told Ashwin on his YouTube channel.
What is Raina's squad rebuild blueprint for CSK?
Raina has identified three specific areas where CSK needs to strengthen its squad for the upcoming season. The first priority involves acquiring a spinner who can take wickets consistently and operate effectively during the powerplay phase. Second, he emphasised the need for a quality left-arm fast bowler to bolster the pace attack. Third, he highlighted the requirement for an all-rounder capable of contributing with the bat in the lower-order positions.
What contract terms does Raina want for the coaching staff?
Regarding the coaching staff's contract structure, Raina has made a clear recommendation to CSK management.
"But with Zaheer, I really want CSK to give the new coaching staff a three-year contract, not just one year," Raina said, emphasising the importance of stability in the coaching setup.
Zaheer Khan's current contract runs for one year, and he has been given the authority to select his own coaching staff members.
India's first-ever T20I centurion's approach to coaching extends beyond technical instruction and tactical guidance.
"It isn't about giving them technical lectures. It is about helping them remain consistent every season,' highlighting his focus on building sustained performance across multiple seasons. This philosophy stems from his experience as a pivotal player during CSK's most successful periods under MS Dhoni's captaincy," Raina said.
Raina's playing record at CSK spans multiple championship victories. He was instrumental in four of the franchise's five IPL titles, establishing himself as one of the most successful players in CSK's history. His contributions during the 2010 and 2011 seasons helped establish CSK as a dominant force, while his performances in 2018 and 2021 further cemented his legacy with the franchise.
