The New York Giants and cornerback Greg Newsome II reached an agreement Tuesday on a three-year contract extension, and the 26-year-old wasted little time expressing his excitement about the deal. Newsome celebrated the development with a seven-word message on X (formerly Twitter), writing:
“BIG BLUE WE ARE HERE TO STAY!!”
The new contract is reportedly worth $46 million, including $32 million in guaranteed money. The agreement comes less than eight months after Newsome joined New York on a one-year, $8 million contract last March. He is now under contract through the 2029 season, avoiding unrestricted free agency next offseason.
Newsome's impressive start to his Giants tenure played a huge role in securing the extension. The former Cleveland Browns first-round selection in 2021 won a starting cornerback position during training camp and has become an essential part of New York's secondary under defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson.
Through six appearances this season, Newsome has recorded 25 tackles, six passes defended and one interception. He missed the Giants' Week 7 win over the Houston Texans because of a concussion.
His coverage numbers furnish a more tangible manifestation of his substantial impact. Opposing quarterbacks have completed just 16 of 29 passes when targeting the receiver covered by Newsome, producing a 61.4 passer rating, according to Pro Football Reference. Meanwhile, New York ranks third in the NFL in passing defense, allowing only 184.9 passing yards per game.
Article Continues BelowNewsome originally entered the league as the 26th overall selection in the 2021 NFL Draft. He spent the first four-plus years of his career with the Browns before joining the Jacksonville Jaguars through a trade last October. The Jaguars subsequently allowed him to enter free agency, leading to his one-year agreement with the Giants.
The extension also provides some financial flexibility for New York ahead of the November 10 trade deadline. However, Newsome's new contract leaves another big decision for the organization. Fellow starting cornerback Deonte Banks is approaching free agency after the Giants declined his fifth-year option for 2027. Meanwhile, Paulson Adebo could become a salary-cap casualty following an inconsistent spell in New York. Releasing him after the season would save New York $14 million while leaving $6.3 million in dead money.
The Giants have, for now, retained Newsome after an exceedingly fruitful first season with the franchise.
