North Carolina A&T Athletics has released a statement regarding the brawl following the team's homecoming victory over Elon. Members of the two football teams got into a physical altercation immediately following the game on North Carolina A&T's sideline.
The full statement from North Carolina A&T's Department of Athletics is below.
“An on-field conflict at the conclusion of North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University’s 100th anniversary homecoming game win Saturday over Elon University was resolved after a joint review by officials from both schools.
A brief fight ensued when the visiting team came to the home team’s side of the field, before both teams left the field without further incident. A&T won the game 13-10 after sacking the Elon quarterback in the final seconds of the game.
‘College is a time to learn and grow, and we were glad to see that ultimately take place in this situation,' said North Carolina A&T Athletics Director Katreshia Louis-Verrett. ‘Both teams played a very competitive game today. We’re proud that A&T came out on top, and wish Elon the best over the rest of its season.'
CAA Commissioner Joe D’Antonio was present at Saturday’s game.”
Following North Carolina A&T’s 13-10 win, Elon players crossed the field to the Aggie sideline and confronted an A&T player, setting off a brawl that members of both coaching staffs eventually broke up.
Broadcast commentators were clear about how it started.
“And now we have some extracurricular activities, and this is an unfortunate end to today’s game,” one said as the scuffle broke out.

The first commentator added that the Elon players had come “all the way over to A&T’s bench,” saying it was not what either coaching staff wanted in that situation.
Asked about the incident, North Carolina A&T head coach Shawn Gibbs said he was unhappy with what he saw, according to the Greensboro News & Record.
“I didn’t like it,” Gibbs said. “I don’t know what really happened, so I don’t want to speculate too much, but I know that their players ran on our sideline. You can’t do that. That was an ugly ending to our moment, and that’s what really made me mad.”
